September 25th - Rome, Italy
It is Day 14 and almost everyone is leaving. Some are going on to see other places and others are heading home. Breakfast is quiet today and we are on our own to see a few more things in Rome.
We returned to the Vatican this morning to find a few geocaches. The Vatican is considered it's own country so we got credit for another country. The caches can not be placed inside the Vatican, so one was at the entrance to the tunnel for the Vatican railroad. We were a little disappointed, but not surprised to see graffiti.
We took the train to see the Baths of Caracalla. They are located by the ancient Appian Way in Rome and were named after the emperor Caracalla who reigned from A.D. 211-217. The ruins of these baths are enormous and very well preserved with many mosaics still partially intact.
Keith told us to always carry a water bottle in Rome. There are water fountains all over with cold, fresh water. No where in the world have fountains been more a part of day-to-day life than Italy.
If it wasn't for geocaching, we would not have made our way to Tiber Island. The Tiber Island is the only island in Tiber River in Rome. It is about 270 m. long and 67 m. wide at the widest point. This boat-shaped formed island is a so called ait, a type of a small island that is seen in rivers. There is an earth cache here.
